The anatomy of a cover letter that gets read
Every example above follows the same three-part structure. Learn it once and you can write a letter for any role in twenty minutes.
Opening: the role, the company and one number
Name the position and the company in the first sentence so the reader knows the letter was written for them, then give the single strongest, quantified result from your recent work. That number does the job an adjective never can. Every example on this page opens this way; compare the software engineer's latency figure with the sales executive's quota attainment to see how the pattern flexes by field.
Body: one story, fully specified, then why them
Pick one project or programme and give its scope, what you did, the tools or methods, and the outcome. Resist listing everything you have done — the resume does that. End the paragraph by connecting your work to something specific about the company: a product problem, a market, a stated goal. If you cannot write that sentence, you have not researched them enough to apply.
Closing: ask for a specific conversation
Say what you would like to discuss — their infrastructure goals, their customers' challenges, your methodology — rather than "any opportunity". It tells the reader what the interview would be about and shows confidence. Thank them in one clause and sign off. Three paragraphs on one page is the norm; four is acceptable at senior levels.
Cover letter FAQs
Do employers still read cover letters?
Fewer than they used to, and it varies by role: many technical and sales postings mark it optional, while writing, marketing, HR, academic and public-sector roles often weigh it heavily. The safe rule is to send a short, specific one whenever there is a field for it and never to send a generic one — a template letter does more harm than no letter.
How long should a cover letter be?
Under one page: three paragraphs, roughly 250–350 words. Senior and academic letters can run to four paragraphs. If yours is longer, you are repeating the resume.
Should the cover letter match my resume's design?
Yes — same header, typeface and accent colour, so the two read as one application. The cover letter builder uses the same template family as your resume for exactly that reason, and both export together as PDF.
Can I use these examples directly?
Use the structure and replace every detail: the role, the company, the metric, the project and the reason you want this job. Hiring managers recognise copied letters instantly, and the {placeholders} in each sample mark exactly where your own facts belong.
How do I write one with no experience?
Each example page has an entry-level variant explaining what to lead with instead of work metrics — projects, coursework, internships, volunteering — and how to be honest about scope. The structure stays the same; only the evidence changes.
