Which tool do I need?
Every tool does one job and hands the result to the next, so most tasks are two clicks: fix the document, then convert or protect it.
Fixing a document before you send it
Most jobs are structural: a scan came out sideways, three PDFs need to become one, a form is missing page numbers, or a 30 MB export will not go through email. Those all run in your browser with the organising tools — nothing is uploaded, and there is no limit on how often you use them.
Signing, protecting and sharing
Sign a contract on screen, lock a payslip or tax document with an AES-256 password, stamp a draft CONFIDENTIAL, or remove a password you know so a file can be merged. These also run locally, which is the point: a document you are signing or encrypting should never sit on someone else's server.
Changing format
PDF to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and HTML to PDF, need a full document engine, so they run on our servers and are included with a paid plan. PDF to image, image to PDF and the image tools (compress, resize, crop, rotate, convert) stay in the browser and free. OCR extracts English text from a scan, also locally.
PDF tools FAQ
Which tools are free and which need a plan?
Every tool that processes the file in your browser is free with no account: merging, splitting, extracting, reordering, rotating, compressing, page numbers, watermarks, signing, password protection and removal, OCR, PDF to image, image to PDF and all five image tools. The Office and HTML conversions run on our servers and are part of the paid plans, alongside PDF and DOCX resume export. The badge on each card says which is which.
Are my files private?
For the free tools, completely — the file is opened, processed and saved on your own device and never transmitted. For the server conversions the file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed once and deleted automatically after you download the result. We do not read, retain or train on uploaded documents.
Is there a file size limit?
Browser tools handle files up to 100 MB; tools that draw every page (PDF to JPG, OCR) are limited to 50 MB and 200 pages so your tab does not run out of memory. Larger documents can be split first and processed in parts. Server conversions accept typical office documents; very large files simply take longer.
Do the tools add a watermark or reduce quality?
No watermarks on any output. Organising tools copy page content unchanged, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution. Compress PDF and Compress Image are the only tools that re-encode images, and they show the before and after sizes so you can judge the trade-off.
Can I use these on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The tools work in mobile Safari and Chrome, though very large files are limited by the device's memory. Signing with a finger on a touch screen is often easier than with a mouse.
