Add Page Numbers — free online tool
Add page numbers to a PDF that was exported without them — a merged report, a scanned agreement, a thesis assembled from several files. Choose where the number sits (bottom or top, left, centre or right) and how it reads: plain 1, 2, 3; 1 / N with the total; or the word Page followed by the number. The numbers are stamped as real text on every page. It runs entirely in your browser — your file never leaves your device, there is nothing to install, and it is free with no sign-up.
- Five placements: bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre, top right
- Three formats — 1, 2, 3 · 1 / 12 · Page 1 — so the style matches the document
- Numbers are added as searchable text, not images, so they print crisply at any size
- Works on mixed page sizes and orientations; each number is positioned per page
- Nothing is uploaded; a 200-page file numbers in a couple of seconds
How to add page numbers
- 1Upload the PDF that needs numbering.
- 2Pick a position — most business documents use bottom centre; legal drafts often use bottom right.
- 3Choose the number format, for example 1 / N when readers need to know the total length.
- 4Click Add Page Numbers and wait for the progress bar to complete.
- 5Download the numbered PDF and check the first and last pages before sending.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering from a page other than the first?
Not in this version — numbering always starts at 1 on the first page. If your document has a cover you do not want numbered, extract it with Extract Pages, number the body, then merge the two files back together with Merge PDF.
Will the numbers collide with existing footers or headers?
The stamp sits inside a small margin at the edge you choose. If the PDF already has content in that corner, pick a different position — top centre is usually clear on documents that carry a footer.
Are the page numbers selectable and searchable?
Yes. They are written as text objects using a standard font, so PDF readers can select them, screen readers announce them and applicant tracking or document-management systems index them like any other text.
Does it change the original page content or size?
No. Page dimensions, existing text, images and links are unchanged. The only addition is one small text object per page; file size grows by a few kilobytes at most.
