Resume vs CV: What's the Difference?

"Resume" and "CV" are often used interchangeably, but they can mean very different documents depending on the country and the role. Using the wrong one can make you look out of step with what an employer expects.

What is a resume?

A resume is a concise, one-to-two-page summary of your relevant skills and experience, tailored to a specific job. In the US and Canada, this is the standard document for almost every private-sector application.

What is a CV?

A CV (curriculum vitae) is a longer, more detailed document covering your full academic and professional history — publications, research, teaching, grants. In the UK, Europe, and much of Asia, "CV" is simply the everyday word for what Americans call a resume. In the US, "CV" specifically means the long academic version.

Key differences

Length: Resume = 1–2 pages. Academic CV = as long as needed.
Purpose: Resume = industry jobs. CV = academia, research, grants, some international roles.
Content: Resume = tailored highlights. CV = comprehensive history.
Region: In the US/Canada the terms differ; in the UK/EU/India "CV" usually just means "resume".

A quick region-by-region guide

Because the words travel differently, the safest move is to match local convention:

United States / Canada: send a resume for jobs; reserve "CV" for academic, research, or medical roles.
United Kingdom / Ireland: employers say "CV" but mean a concise 1–2 page document — effectively a resume.
Europe: "CV" is standard; many roles still expect a short, focused document (the Europass format is common).
India / Middle East / much of Asia: "CV" and "resume" are used interchangeably for a short document.
Academia anywhere: a full academic CV with publications and funding is expected, regardless of country.

Converting between the two

If you have an academic CV and need a resume, don't just trim pages — re-select. Keep only what's relevant to the job, translate research and teaching into outcome-focused bullets, and lead with a summary. Going the other way, a resume expands into a CV by adding the full history a resume deliberately leaves out: every publication, presentation, grant, and role. Which should you use?
