Which resume fonts read well, print well and extract cleanly from a PDF. Sizes, pairings, the fonts to avoid, and why a font can fail an ATS scan.
Every list of resume fonts is written from a screenshot: the author types "Experience" in twelve typefaces and picks the prettiest. That misses two of the three things a resume font has to do. It has to read on a laptop at 90% zoom, it has to print on a hiring manager's office printer, and the text underneath it has to survive being extracted by software before a person ever sees the page.
We build resume templates and an ATS checker, so we get to test all three. This is the list that came out of it — the seven fonts we ship in the builder, the reasons, and the families that fail one of the three tests.
What a font has to survive
An applicant tracking system does not look at your resume. It extracts the text layer from the PDF or DOCX and reads that. Our checker does the same thing before it scores anything, and the parseability dimension — worth 25% of the score when you scan against a role — includes a check called standard embedded fonts. It fails when the template uses a handwriting, script, comic, display or decorative family, and the reason is not aesthetic: those fonts are the ones most often built with non-standard character mappings, so "Managed" can extract as "M anaged" or as a run of private-use characters. A font that looks handsome and extracts as noise is a font that loses you the keyword match.
The second survival test is embedding. A PDF that references a font without embedding it will substitute on the reader's machine, and if the substitute has different metrics your lines rewrap, your two-page resume becomes three, and dates drift off their columns. Every PDF our builder exports embeds its fonts; if you make your resume elsewhere, check that yours does (File → Properties → Fonts in Acrobat lists "Embedded Subset" beside each face). The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines' contrast and text-size guidance is a good reference for the on-screen half of the problem.
The third is plain legibility at small sizes on screen, where most first reads happen now. Fonts with a large x-height and open apertures — the counters in e, a and c — hold up at 10.5 pt; fonts with tight, elegant letterforms do not.
The seven fonts we ship, and who each one suits
These are the choices in the builder's Customize panel. Each was picked because it passes all three tests and covers a different register.
Inter — the first choice in our Customize panel and the face many of our templates default to. Designed for screens, with a tall x-height and generous spacing, so it stays legible at small sizes and in dense two-column layouts. Neutral enough for any industry. If you are not sure, use this.
Roboto — slightly narrower than Inter, so it fits a little more text per line. Familiar to anyone who uses Android or Google products, which is most people; reads as contemporary without being a statement. Good for product, marketing and operations resumes.
Outfit — a geometric sans-serif with more personality. It suits creative, brand and startup roles where a hint of design sensibility is a plus. Keep it for headings if you are in a conservative field; the round forms are less at home in a banking resume.
Georgia (listed as Serif) — the serif we recommend most. Drawn for screens in the 1990s, it has a larger x-height than Times and stays clear at 11 pt. The right choice for law, finance, consulting, government and academic resumes, and for anyone whose reader will print the page.
Merriweather — a heavier, warmer serif. Excellent in print and on high-resolution screens; slightly dark at small sizes on older monitors, so use 11 pt rather than 10.5. Suits senior and executive resumes and long-form academic CVs.
Playfair Display — a high-contrast display serif. This one is for headings only: your name and section titles on a creative or editorial resume, paired with Inter or Roboto for the body. Set body text in Playfair and the thin hairlines disappear at 11 pt.
Mono (the system monospace) — for a narrow set of technical resumes where the aesthetic is deliberate. It uses roughly 15% more horizontal space than a proportional font, so expect one page to become one and a half. Extraction is fine; readability at length is the cost.
Sizes that work
Body text at 10.5–11.5 pt. Section headings at 12–14 pt. Name at 16–22 pt. Contact line at 9.5–10 pt is acceptable because it is short. Below 10 pt, printed text becomes hard to read and screen text becomes hard to skim, and our density check flags resumes whose page count has been forced down by shrinking type rather than by cutting words — the word band the engine expects is 350–850 words on one to two pages.
Line spacing between 1.15 and 1.3 gives the eye somewhere to land. Margins of 0.6–1 inch. If your content does not fit at those settings, the fix is editorial, not typographic: remove the role from 2011 or the third bullet that restates the second.
Fonts to avoid, and why each fails
Script and handwriting fonts (Brush Script, Pacifico, Lobster, anything "signature"). Fail all three tests: hard to read, awful in print, and the most likely to extract as garbage. Our checker marks them as a parseability failure outright.
Comic Sans and its relatives. Legible, but they signal that the writer did not consider the reader. Hiring managers mention it without prompting.
Ultra-thin and ultra-light weights (Raleway Thin, Lato Hairline). They look refined on a designer's 5K monitor and vanish on a 1080p laptop and on a laser printer set to draft.
Condensed display faces (Bebas Neue, Oswald at body size). Fine for a heading; at 11 pt the narrow counters close up and the text becomes a grey bar.
Symbol and icon fonts (Wingdings, Font Awesome glyphs used for a phone or envelope icon beside your contact details). The icon has no text value, so the label for your phone number is lost in extraction — the checker's no extraction-hostile characters check counts these, and its contact details in the document body check is where a resume with icon-labelled contact lines loses points.
Fonts that are not on the reader's machine and not embedded. Any font at all becomes a problem if the PDF does not carry it. This is a file problem more than a font problem, and it is the reason we recommend exporting from a tool that embeds rather than printing to PDF from a browser.

Pairings that hold up
If you want two fonts, keep the pair simple and give each a job:
- Georgia headings + Inter body — the safest serious pairing for finance, law and consulting.
- Playfair Display name and headings + Roboto body — editorial and creative resumes, where the display serif does the visual work and the sans keeps the body readable.
- Inter Bold headings + Inter Regular body — one family, two weights. This is what most of our templates do, and it is the pairing that never looks wrong.
- Merriweather body + Inter headings — an unusual inversion that reads well in long academic CVs where the body text dominates.
Avoid two sans-serifs together (Roboto headings with Inter body looks like a mistake rather than a choice) and avoid two serifs.
Region and industry notes
In the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia there is no expectation about serif versus sans-serif; the choice signals register, not compliance. In Germany and much of continental Europe a serif is slightly more conventional for senior applications. Law firms, investment banks and courts still skew serif. Technology, product and design skew sans-serif. Government portals often convert your upload to plain text before a person sees it, which makes the font irrelevant and the extraction test decisive.
If you are applying through a large employer's careers site, assume an ATS is the first reader and choose from the seven above. If you are emailing a PDF to a founder, choose whichever of the seven matches the company.
How to check your own file
Export your resume to PDF, then run it through the ATS checker. The parseability section reports the standard-fonts check and whether contact details were found in the body; the no extraction-hostile characters line tells you whether icons or decorative symbols leaked into the text. What is the best font for a resume?
For most people, a clean sans-serif at 10.5–11.5 pt — Inter, Roboto or Calibri — or a readable serif such as Georgia or Merriweather for law, finance and academia. The best font is the one you will not notice; the reader's attention should go to your results, not the letterforms.
Do applicant tracking systems care which font I use?
Indirectly. An ATS reads the text layer of your file, not the glyph shapes, so a standard font extracts perfectly. Problems come from decorative and script fonts, fonts that were not embedded in the PDF, and symbol fonts used for icons — all of which can extract as wrong or missing characters.
What font size should a resume be?
10.5–11.5 pt for body text, 12–14 pt for section headings, and your name at 16–22 pt. Going below 10 pt to fit a page is the most common formatting mistake we see; cut content instead.
Is Times New Roman still acceptable on a resume?
Yes. It is dated-looking to some readers but it is legible, universally installed and extracts cleanly. Georgia or Merriweather give the same serif seriousness with more open letterforms on screen.
Can I use two fonts on a resume?
One is enough; two is the maximum. If you pair, use one for headings and one for body — a serif heading with a sans-serif body, or a bold weight of the same family. Three fonts reads as indecision.
