How to Write Your Work Experience Section

Your work experience is the heart of your resume. Recruiters don't want a job description — they want evidence you delivered results. Here's how to write it.

Structure each role

List job title, company, location, and dates, then 3–5 achievement bullets. Put your strongest, most relevant bullet first — many recruiters only read the top one or two.

The achievement bullet formula

Action verb + what you did + measurable result. For example: "Cut support response time 30% by introducing a triage workflow."

Quantify whenever possible

Numbers make achievements credible — percentages, revenue, time saved, team size, volume. No metrics handy? Estimate ranges honestly. See real examples in our resume examples by role.

Order bullets by impact, not chronology

Within a single role, your bullets don't need to follow the order things happened. Lead with the achievement that's most impressive and most relevant to the job you're targeting, then work down. Recruiters often read only the first bullet or two of each role, so your best work should never be buried at the bottom.

Promotions and multiple roles at one company

If you were promoted, list the company once and show each title with its own dates beneath — it signals growth and loyalty. Don't repeat the company as if they were separate jobs; that hides the promotion and looks like job-hopping at a glance.

How far back should my work history go?

Generally 10–15 years or your last 3–4 relevant roles. Older or unrelated jobs can be summarised or dropped.

Should I show promotions as separate entries?

List the company once and stack the titles with their dates beneath it. This highlights your progression instead of making it look like several short stints.

What if my job had no measurable results?

Look for proxies — efficiency gains, things you built or improved, scope (people, budget, volume). Almost every role has quantifiable impact.
